Build the web maps, tile pipelines, and spatial services our clients run in production.
About Afterrealism
Afterrealism is a small geospatial software consultancy in Canberra. We build maps, data platforms, and cloud systems for organisations across Australia to a standard set inside Geoscience Australia and CSIRO.
Small is the point: you work directly with the founder, your decisions ship, and you can see exactly where your work lands.
About the role
You'll build the software side of our geospatial work: interactive web maps, spatial APIs, tile services, and the data pipelines that feed them.
Our stack leans modern and open — SvelteKit, MapLibre, deck.gl, PostGIS, cloud-native formats like COG and PMTiles, and edge deployment on Cloudflare. You'll ship real systems that real organisations depend on.
What you'll do
- Build interactive web mapping applications (MapLibre, deck.gl, or similar)
- Design and run spatial APIs and tile services (vector tiles, COG, PMTiles)
- Model and query spatial data in PostGIS
- Build ETL pipelines for geospatial data
- Deploy and operate services on cloud platforms
What we're looking for
- Solid JavaScript/TypeScript
- Experience with at least one modern web mapping library
- SQL and PostGIS fundamentals
- Comfortable with Git and code review
- Pragmatic API design instincts
Nice to have
- SvelteKit or another modern meta-framework
- Serverless / edge platforms (Cloudflare Workers, Lambda)
- GDAL and the command-line geospatial toolbox
- Open-source contributions
